Medical Specialists Warn Against Uninformed Criticism of Surgeries, Urge Government Investigation
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Association of Medical Specialists (AMS) has formally raised concerns with Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa over what it describes as a troubling trend—individuals lacking technical expertise making adverse public comments about the suitability and outcomes of complex surgeries and medical procedures conducted by qualified medical specialists.

According to the AMS, these unverified and non-expert opinions, which have been widely circulated across mainstream and social media platforms, have led to growing public doubt regarding the country’s healthcare system. The association warns that such commentary is causing undue anxiety among patients awaiting vital treatment.

In its letter, the AMS further claims that these statements are part of a broader effort to tarnish the professional image of medical specialists and undermine public trust in the healthcare system as a whole.

Labeling the situation as an “unsafe trend,” the AMS has called on the Ministry of Health to launch a full investigation into these incidents. The association also urges the Ministry to commission a comprehensive technical expert report to clarify the facts.

The AMS states that such action is critical to safeguarding the professional integrity of medical specialists, who continue to deliver high-quality care across the country despite limited resources.

Moreover, the association stresses the urgent need for the government to communicate the truth surrounding this matter. It believes that doing so will help ease the concerns of patients currently awaiting or preparing for complex—but often life-saving—medical and surgical procedures.

The letter has been jointly signed by Dr. T.G.Y. Rasika Gunapala, President of the Association of Medical Specialists, and Dr. R. Gnanasekaram, Secretary. A copy has also been forwarded to the Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Anil Jasinghe.
