Its chairman Mawei Senadhiraja had first stated that he was not aware of the decision taken by the Ilangei Tamil Arasu Katchi Central Committee to support the current opposition leader in the presidential election battle, but he later (02) told journalists in Jaffna that he should accept the decision. “We have the responsibility to implement the decision taken by the Tamil Arasu Kachchi Central Committee regarding this election. It is the responsibility of Tamil Arasu Kachchi. We have to do that. But, the people should think and cast their votes especially thinking about the future liberation of the Tamil nation while taking the decisions of the election.
Ilangei Tamil Arasu Katchi President Mavei Senadhiraja, who attended the memorial service of former MP V Dharmalingam, said in Jaffna on September 2:
Member of Parliament MA Sumandhiran announced on September 1 that the Ilangei Tamil Arasu Party (ITAK) decided to support Mr Sajith Premadasa at a special central committee meeting held in Vavuniya.
Later Mavei Senadhiraja had said that it was a decision taken in a council without him and not the official opinion of the party.
But the day after that, the former MP Mawei Senadhiraja, who said that the party’s opinion should be accepted, turned aside the statement he made the previous day and further emphasized that the people of the Tamil land should unite and use the election for the liberation of the nation.
“Also, the Tamil people, the people of all the provinces of the Tamil land should unite and use this election for the liberation of our nation. That liberation is very important for us. I request that we should all work together for that liberation.” He said.
However, it was seen that this news of Mr Mavei Senadhiraja was given more publicity than the decision of the Tamil Arasu Katchi Party to support Mr. Sajeeth Premadasa by a certain TV channel in the south and by the people who are loyal to the President and JVP.
It is so much that yesterday Mr. Mavei Senadhiraja had announced in a special statement that he would support Mr Sajith Premadasa by following the party’s decision, but last night also the same TV channel reported that Mr. Mavei Senadhiraja had not supported Mr Sajith Premadasa.
