The Matara Journalists’ Charity Aid Program, launched to support fellow journalists whose lives were disrupted by Cyclone Ditwa, was carried out in the Nuwara Eliya and Kandy districts yesterday (09).

As part of the initiative, parcels containing essential items and dry rations were distributed to Nuwara Eliya Regional Reporter R.F.M. Suhel, whose home was declared a disaster zone after landslides caused the front and back of his house to collapse. Aid was also extended to regional journalist Douglas Nanayakkara, whose residence was partially damaged when an earthen embankment gave way behind his home.

In addition, local journalists Anura Ananda, Ruwan Meegammana, and Samantha Weerasekara—whose homes in the Kandy district were damaged due to landslides and fallen trees—also received support through the compassionate efforts of the Matara journalists.

To date, Matara journalists have provided parcels containing essential items, including dry food and materials, to 33 journalists across 09 districts, extending assistance through the collective goodwill of the Matara Journalists’ Organization.
