The people of Mannar have been protesting for nearly two months, demanding a halt to the construction of a proposed wind farm and the mining of mineral sand around the island.
Residents claim that both projects pose serious environmental risks that could affect their livelihoods and the ecological balance of the region.
Today marks the 58th consecutive day of the protest. To intensify their campaign, residents and the business community launched a hartal, closing all shops across the area. Public transport services were also suspended, while a massive protest was staged at the Mannar Public Playground.
According to our correspondents, people from neighboring areas also arrived in Mannar today to extend their support to the protestors. The demonstrators later marched to the Mannar District Secretariat to voice their concerns.
Police officers were deployed to control the situation. However, as protestors continued their demonstration despite police orders, a tense standoff arose between the police and the protestors.
The protest later concluded after participants handed over letters addressed to the President to the Mannar District Secretary.
