Malwathu–Asgiri Chiefs Condemn Defamation Over Diyawadana Nilame Post
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A statement has been issued by the Mahanayaka Theros of the Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters, drawing attention to the defamatory discussions taking place regarding the post of Diyawadana Nilame, and the resulting harm caused to the honor of the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic), both Maha Viharas, and the entire Buddhist community.

The Diyawadana Nilame, who holds the lay custodianship of the Sacred Tooth Relic—the foremost symbol of reverence for Buddhists worldwide—is regarded as the foremost lay Buddhist in Sri Lanka. Internationally too, within Buddhist countries, the position of Diyawadana Nilame is held in the highest respect and dignity.

According to the Vihara Devalagam Ordinance No. 19 of 1931, the Diyawadana Nilame is appointed through an election process for a term of 10 years.

At present, the term of the incumbent Diyawadana Nilame has ended, and the process of appointing a new Diyawadana Nilame is underway. Several candidates, including the current officeholder, have come forward to contest for the position.

In the statement issued by the Mahanayaka Theros, it is emphasized that defamatory campaigns are being carried out by various external groups with the narrow motive of promoting the candidate they support. As a result, the Buddhist community has become subject to ridicule before the world, and distorted impressions regarding Buddhist sacred institutions are being spread in society, which is deeply concerning.

The statement further notes:

“Certain organizations and individuals, based on personal agendas, are at this time making baseless and malicious statements with ill intent, thereby insulting the Buddhist community. We strongly denounce such hostile acts. We urge all candidates to reject such narrow motives, and instead act with determination to safeguard the dignity and honor of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, the post of Diyawadana Nilame, the post of Basnayake Nilame, and all associated offices connected to these sacred institutions.”
