During a press conference at the Opposition Leader’s office in Colombo today, Member of Parliament SM Marikkar made significant statements. He declared the readiness of their party to form a broad alliance for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections. Marikkar announced an imminent agreement between Samagi Janabalawega and Samagi Janasandhana with the group led by Prof. GL, following extensive discussions on various policy matters.
Marikkar expressed concerns regarding the Easter attack during the tenure of former President Maithripala Sirisena, highlighting the lack of clarity surrounding the investigation and the subsequent strain it caused among different religious communities. He emphasized the need for justice for the victims and accountability from those in authority.
Criticizing the economic policies of the current government, Marikkar condemned the heavy tax burden imposed on citizens, professionals, and businesses. He highlighted the detrimental effects of such policies on the economy, leading to the collapse of numerous small and medium enterprises and exacerbating financial hardships for the general population.
Marikkar also criticized the government’s failure to address corruption and illegal profiteering, which further contributes to the rising cost of goods and services. He called for action to reduce taxes and curb illicit financial activities to alleviate the burden on the public.
Additionally, Marikkar commented on the political landscape, suggesting that President Ranil Wickremesinghe may opt not to contest the upcoming presidential election. He highlighted the growing support for the Samagi Janabalawega, indicating their readiness for any forthcoming elections.
Furthermore, Marikkar extended an invitation to opposition leader Sajith Premadasa for a debate, underscoring their commitment to engage in constructive dialogue before the elections. He expressed eagerness to participate in such discussions and awaited a response from their counterparts.
