Mahinda Samarasinghe, a Beloved National Figure, Steps Down from Government Position

Mahinda Samarasinghe, the veteran diplomat who has been serving as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the United States for several years, has reportedly decided to resign from the position in the near future.

The significant development is that he has decided to step down before the completion of his official term.

Mahinda Samarasinghe was appointed as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the United States on December 6, 2021, during the administration of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

At a time when Sri Lanka was severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Samarasinghe played a key role in securing vaccines and essential medicines from the United States.

He was also instrumental in obtaining substantial assistance from the United States to help Sri Lanka navigate the economic crisis that emerged during the latter period of the Gotabaya Rajapaksa administration.

As a result, both former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who succeeded Gotabaya Rajapaksa, and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who later came to power, took steps to retain Mahinda Samarasinghe in the ambassadorial post.

During this period, Samarasinghe is also reported to have carried out extensive diplomatic efforts from the United States aimed at minimizing the tariff rates imposed by President Donald Trump.

However, reports now indicate that Mahinda Samarasinghe has decided to resign from the post of Ambassador before the conclusion of his term.

Meanwhile, information received suggests that several major opposition parties have already proposed his name for the position of Foreign Minister in a future government.

Mahinda Samarasinghe previously served as Foreign Minister during the administration of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. During that tenure, he became the first person in Sri Lanka’s history to successfully defeat allegations of war crimes raised against the country at the Geneva Human Rights Commission through a vote linked to Sri Lanka’s wartime victory.
