The police have started an investigation regarding the jeep in which former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Minister Johnston Fernando were travelling when passing the Kurunegala Yaggahapitiya exit of the Central Expressway, the barrier of the ticket counter fell on the jeep and damaged it. The front glass and the vehicle of the luxury jeep in which Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa was travelling were damaged in this incident which took place at around 9.30 am yesterday (28th). While Mr Mahinda Rajapaksa and Mr Johnston Fernando were on their way to Anuradhapura, they passed through the Kurunegala Yaggahapitiya exit, preceded by a police motorcycle and a jeep carrying security personnel.
As soon as the police motorcycle and the jeep in which the security guards were travelling passed the exit gate, the employee at the ticket counter lowered the barrier there and it hit the front of the vehicle in which Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa was travelling and broke.
Police sources say that the employee involved in this incident will be taken into police custody and produced before the court.
According to the police, such incidents are due to the carelessness of some employees working at the ticket counters on the highways.
