Heartfelt Congratulations to Aravinda de Silva on Achieving an All-Time Great Status
Dear Aravinda,
I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you for securing a well-deserved spot as the fourth Sri Lankan in the esteemed list of all-time cricket greats. It brings me immense pride to witness your recognition in this elite group, and when asked, Murali, Sanga, and I unanimously assert that we, the pioneers, were the first to grace this illustrious list.
Reflecting on our shared journey, I recall the days of my childhood when, as a wide-eyed enthusiast, I sought your autograph. Back then, you were a fresh face in the national team, but it didn’t take long for you to ascend to the title of Sri Lanka’s premier batsman. Your influence on the game was profound, shaping the cricket landscape that we, as youngsters, grew up admiring.
You demonstrated the essence of adaptability, consistently altering your batting approach, stance, and bat lift. Your cricketing acumen was evident, and you showed me the importance of evolving with the times. In 1997, when I earned my national call-up, I vividly remember entering the players’ lounge and deliberately choosing a spot not far from yours. It dawned on me that you were the mentor I needed to unravel the intricacies of cricket. Our partnership in the international arena, especially during the historic 952-run world record innings, fills me with immense pride. I appreciate your selfless guidance, shaping my cricketing journey without a hint of selfishness.
While Sanga may have accumulated more runs, there’s no disputing the consensus that you remain the finest batsman ever born in Sri Lanka. I take pride in having shared the slip zone with you, learning valuable lessons about reading the batsman’s weaknesses and executing strategies to dismiss them. I vividly recall the day when Vas replicated your advice, resulting in a wicket. It was a testament to your wisdom, even if some of our brother’s sports club mates weren’t as eager to face him.
In the realm of national responsibilities, your meticulous approach is beyond doubt. We, the first generation under your tutelage, experienced firsthand your dedication to elevating our fitness levels as we navigated the challenges of cricket. Your position on the all-time greats list is a testament to your unwavering commitment, and I am proud that the four of us now share this prestigious recognition. I express my gratitude, dear brother, for your unwavering support, both on and off the field, throughout my cricketing career.
Best wishes,
Mahela Jayawardene
