Local Paediatrician Honored with Outstanding Asia Paediatrician Award

Professor Pujitha Wickramasinghe, Senior Professor in Paediatrics at the University of Colombo and Honorary Consultant Paediatrician at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, has been awarded the prestigious Outstanding Asia Paediatrician Award by the Asia Pacific Paediatric Association (APPA). This esteemed honor was presented to him at the 18th Asia Pacific Conference of Paediatrics, to be held in Cebu, Philippines, on November 16, 2024.

The Outstanding Asia Paediatrician Award recognizes exceptional contributions to the field of paediatrics, particularly those that enhance child health and well-being within the Asia Pacific region. Professor Wickramasinghe has earned this accolade through his unwavering commitment to improving paediatric healthcare and his extensive research in childhood diseases, nutrition, and public health.

With over twenty years of experience in clinical practice and academia, Professor Wickramasinghe’s influence in the field of paediatrics extends beyond Sri Lanka. He has played a pivotal role in various international health initiatives in collaboration with UN organization such as WHO, UNICEF, FAO and academic institutes, advocating for children’s health rights, and engaging in collaborative research projects that address pressing health issues in the region.

In addition to his clinical and research work, Professor Wickramasinghe is renowned for his dedication to educating future healthcare professionals. His mentorship has inspired countless students and young doctors, fostering a new generation committed to advancing child health.

“It is an incredible honor to receive this award, and I am deeply grateful for the recognition,” Professor Wickramasinghe stated. “This achievement reflects not just my efforts, but the mentoring I received from my teachers, hard work and collaboration of my colleagues and the support of my institution and family.”

Award was given at the recently concluded 18th Asia Pacific Congress of Paediatrics (APCP) in Cebu Philippines on 16th Nov 2024. Award was presented by Prof. Iqbal Ahmad Memon, President 2022-2024, Asia Pacific Paediatric Association (APPA) and Prof. Joselyn A. Eusebio, Congress Chair
