Local Journalists Excluded from Nuwara Eliya Wasantha Festival Inauguration

Local journalists in Nuwara Eliya have voiced their displeasure after not being invited to the inaugural ceremony of this year’s Wasantha Festival, as the media has increasingly highlighted shortcomings of the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council.

For nearly 25 years, the state channel has traditionally invited journalists from all media outlets to cover the opening ceremony of the Wasantha Festival. The festival, organized by the Municipal Council, attracts both local and foreign tourists to Nuwara Eliya every April.

However, this year, no journalists were invited to the inauguration ceremony. When questioned, several municipal councilors explained that the decision was made because some journalists have repeatedly pointed out flaws and shortcomings within the council.

Journalists have consistently covered the Wasantha Sanakeliya opening ceremony and other events promoting the development of Nuwara Eliya’s tourism industry. They expressed disappointment over the council’s decision to exclude them, citing criticism of the council as the reason for the omission.
