The deaths of seven individuals at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital have been confirmed to be caused by Leptospirosis, according to the Epidemiology Division of the Ministry of Health.

This confirmation follows laboratory testing of samples collected from the patients, who were admitted to the hospital in recent days with symptoms of fever and breathing difficulties.

Dr. Thushani Dambarera, a Community Medicine Specialist from the Epidemiology Division, provided further details, stating:
“The samples of these seven patients were sent for analysis to the Medical Research Institute and the Kandy National Hospital laboratory. Several of the samples have tested positive for Leptospirosis. Additional investigations are ongoing to determine if other diseases, such as influenza, may also be involved.”

Authorities are continuing their efforts to uncover any additional health risks linked to these cases while urging the public to remain vigilant.
