Kelum Harshana, who was arrested in connection with promoting LTTE Mahaviru Day celebrations, has been granted bail by the Fort Chief Magistrate’s Court.
Attorney-at-Law Manoj Gamage stated that the court ruled there was no evidence of terrorism promotion in the charges against the suspect, leading to the bail decision.
The arrests were made by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on October 30, with three individuals detained for allegedly disrupting public order. The suspects, aged 28, 35, and 45, hail from Maradana, Chunnakam, and Baddegama, respectively.
According to police, the suspects were accused of sharing photos and videos of Velupillai Prabhakaran, the leader of the banned LTTE, via Facebook. They were also charged with distributing outdated footage of past LTTE Mahaviru Day celebrations, falsely portraying them as recent events.
The suspects were arrested under Section 120 of the Penal Code and Section 27 of the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act No. 48 of 1978. Authorities allege the individuals engaged in inciting public unrest and spreading false content online in a manner that appeared to support the activities of a proscribed organization.
This development has sparked widespread attention, highlighting the ongoing scrutiny surrounding digital activities related to sensitive national security matters.
