A man suspected of sexually abusing boys under the age of 18 has been taken into police custody, according to Sri Lanka Latest News.
The Police Media Division stated that based on a complaint received, the Child and Women Sexual Offense Prevention and Investigation Division arrested a 38-year-old businessman.
Complaint received in November
The Police Media Division told BBC Sinhala that the complaint regarding the sexual abuse of a 16-year-old boy was lodged with the Child and Women Sexual Offense Prevention and Investigation Division on November 24 of last year.
Following the complaint, the division reported the matter to the court and subsequently launched an investigation into the case, the police said.
Accordingly, the police noted that both the suspect’s residence and his business premises in the Kandy area have been searched in connection with the allegations.
Video Evidence Found on Computer
According to the Police Media Division, investigators examined electronic devices at the suspect’s business premises in Peradeniya, Kandy.
During the investigation, officials found videos on a laptop belonging to the suspect showing sexual abuse of more than 30 boys, including the boy mentioned in the initial complaint, believed to be under the age of 18.
Investigation Ongoing
The Police Media Division told BBC Sinhala that the Child and Women Sexual Offense Prevention and Investigation Division is continuing its investigation into the videos.
Following the reporting of the incident to the Kandy Magistrate’s Court, the suspect has been remanded for 72 hours for questioning, and the Kothalawala police are currently handling the investigation, the division added.
