JVP Founder Rohana Wijeweera Arrested After 35 Years: Son Uvindu Reflects on Family’s Dark Past and Justice Ahead

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) founder Rohana Wijeweera has been arrested after 35 years, and his son, Uvindu Wijeweera, shared the following message on his Facebook page:

“Some places we have lived in hold remarkable memories.

Incredible encounters, unforgettable farewells.

As the second generation of this journey, I return to Ulapane in Kandy. Nearly 35 years ago, my mother carried me from this very land on a dark night, holding my younger brother in her arms, guiding my older sister by hand, fleeing in fear of death… a place we left behind so long ago. (In this moment, I think of all mothers and children from both sides who endured that dark past.)

Life is extraordinary.

Walking along the road, I see Ulapane’s St. Mary’s Estate and the current Youth Services Council.

My mother, who came from Ulapane to the camp that day, is still there… I wonder if I will ever step into that house again. There is much left to accomplish in the pursuit of justice until that day arrives.

Today, we bid our farewells from a distance.

Father, I see you in my mind, walking for the last time toward St. Mary’s Garden in Ulapane.”
