Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, the most senior judge of the Supreme Court, is scheduled to take oaths today as the 49th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka before President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
A ceremonial sitting to mark this significant occasion will be held on Thursday morning, July 31, at the Supreme Court.
Justice Surasena earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1985 before enrolling at Sri Lanka Law College. He was admitted as an Attorney-at-Law in 1989 and began his legal career as a State Counsel in the Attorney General’s Department.
In 2007, he was appointed as a High Court Judge and later elevated to the Court of Appeal on January 20, 2016. He served as President of the Court of Appeal from January 15, 2018, until his appointment to the Supreme Court on January 9, 2019.
Throughout his judicial career, Justice Surasena has presided over several high-profile cases.
