A jailer and a warder have been arrested in connection with the death of an inmate following an incident at the Colombo Magazine Prison.
The Department of Prisons stated that a special internal investigation has been launched into the incident. Prison Media Spokesperson A.C. Gajanayake said the inquiry is being conducted under the supervision of an Assistant Prison Superintendent.
According to reports, two inmates and a prison officer were injured and admitted to hospital during the incident, which took place yesterday (27) morning at the Magazine Prison.
One inmate has reportedly died.
The Department of Prisons identified the deceased as a 38-year-old remand prisoner who had been arrested on drug-related charges.
It was further reported that a prison guard attempted to prevent two inmates from escaping from their cells, during which the injuries were sustained.
A complaint regarding the incident has also been lodged with the Borella Police.
Police Media Spokesperson stated that the Borella Police have launched a separate special investigation into the matter.
