Five police officers, including the Horovpatana police OIC, saluted and apologized in Sinhala style before the Supreme Court today (01) to the three persons arrested and released on suspicion of being detained in connection with the Easter terror attack.Sri Lanka Latest News

The apology was made when the fundamental rights petitions filed by Senul Abdin Irfan, Senul Abdin Khalifatullah and Nurge Zakaria were called before the Supreme Court today, alleging that their fundamental rights were violated by being illegally arrested and detained for more than six months.

The Deputy Solicitor General, who appeared for the concerned police officers, stated before the court that they will not re-interrogate the concerned persons regarding the incident.

The petitions were called before the Supreme Court bench of Justices S Thurai Raja, Kumuduni Wickramasinghe and Achala Vengappuli.

The then Horowpatana Police Station Commander Roshan Sanjeewa, Police Sergeant Premaratne, Sergeant Sisira, Police Constable Jayathilaka and Cabithigolla Police Station Commander who were named as respondents in these petitions had made this apology by personally appearing in the open court.

Deputy Solicitor General Madhava Thennakone, who appeared for the Attorney General, stated that a case had been filed against these petitioners under the Prevention of Terrorism Act in the Horowpatana Magistrate’s Court.

He further mentioned that they were acquitted in those cases in 2022.

It was stated before the court that according to the complaints received after the terrorist attack on Easter Sunday, the police arrested these petitioners and it was reported in the media that more than one hundred crore rupees had been exchanged in their accounts.

However, the petitioners, pointing out that the court ruled to acquit them of all charges, had filed these petitions requesting a verdict that their basic human rights had been violated.
