Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen has lodged a formal complaint with the Ministry of Public Security, claiming he was unlawfully arrested based on fabricated evidence.
In response, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has ordered an investigation into the allegations. As part of this probe, statements will be recorded from Senior DIG of the North Western Province, Kithsiri Jayalath, and Acting DIG of the Kandy District, Mahinda Dissanayake, according to a report by Mawbima.
Dr. Shihabdeen was apprehended on May 25, 2019, by a team operating under then-DIG Kithsiri Jayalath, who was in charge of the North Western Province. He was accused of allegedly performing actions that led to the harm of approximately 1,000 mothers.
The arrest was reportedly based on the testimony of ten individuals. However, investigations have since revealed that nine out of these ten testimonies were fabricated, with dates deliberately altered.
This development marks a significant step in uncovering the truth behind Dr. Shihabdeen’s arrest and addressing the allegations of falsified evidence.
