Several interlocutory petitions have been submitted to the Supreme Court requesting the dismissal of the petition that seeks to prevent the holding of the presidential election as currently planned, according to Sri Lanka Latest News.
Samagi Jana Balavega General Secretary Ranjith Maddumabandara, National Jana Balavega Members of Parliament Vijitha Herath, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and Socialist Youth Union’s Eranga Gunasekara have presented the petitions.
Additionally, a group including the former convener of the Inter-University Student Council, Wasantha Mudalige, has also submitted an interim petition.
The intervening petitioners argue that Article 30(2) of the Constitution was amended by Chapter 03 of the 19th Amendment, reducing the President’s term of office from 6 years to 5 years. They claim that, according to the Constitution, the current President’s term will end this year, necessitating a presidential election this year.
They also allege that the original petitioner has attempted to mislead the court by presenting false information while seeking to postpone the presidential election. The petitioners assert that the original petitioner has failed to provide any facts to justify his request.
The intervening petitioners request that the Supreme Court allow them to intervene and present their arguments and that the Court dismiss the original petition based on the facts they have provided.
The original petition, filed by entrepreneur C.D. Lenawa, seeks an order preventing the holding of the presidential election as currently planned until the Supreme Court provides an interpretation regarding the end date of the President’s term of office.
