Indian Navy Seeks Private Sector Innovation for Autonomous Underwater Smart Communication Buoy
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Indian Navy has launched the iDEX DISC 12 Challenge, inviting private sector companies to contribute to the design and development of an advanced Underwater Smart Communication Buoy. This buoy, intended for passive surveillance and data transmission in open sea environments, represents a strategic effort to bolster indigenous defense capabilities under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The program aims to decrease reliance on foreign technology by promoting domestic solutions for essential defense systems.

The envisioned Underwater Smart Communication Buoy will facilitate passive underwater surveillance at depths of up to 200 meters. At programmed intervals, it will surface to relay critical acoustic data to a base station via satellite communication. Designed for autonomous operation, the buoy is expected to function independently in open seas for up to 90 days, gathering and analyzing data without human intervention.

Key Features Outlined by the Indian Navy:

  1. Smart Communication: The buoy will surface periodically to ensure efficient, real-time transmission of data, supporting continuous situational awareness.
  2. Autonomous Operation: It must operate independently, adapting to programmed depths and locations in the open sea, without the need for manual oversight.
  3. Data Collection and Edge Computing: The buoy will capture acoustic data for surveillance, utilizing edge computing to process and filter critical information. Only the most relevant data will be transmitted to the base station via satellite.
  4. Compact and Self-Sustaining Design: Designed for durability, the buoy must be compact, easy to deploy, and capable of sustaining itself in challenging marine environments for up to 90 days.

This initiative underscores the Indian Navy’s commitment to advancing indigenous technology in defense and expanding India’s self-reliance in critical maritime systems.
