High Commissioner Santosh Jha’s recent visit to the Eastern Province underscores the unique relationship between India and the region. During his tour from May 1st to May 4th, 2024, he engaged with local leaders, inspected development projects, and emphasized the significance of bilateral cooperation.

Throughout his interactions in Ampara, Batticaloa, and Trincomalee, the High Commissioner reiterated the importance of the Eastern Province in the India-Sri Lanka partnership. He showcased India’s commitment through various projects aimed at enhancing connectivity, energy, and infrastructure in the region.

Notable highlights of the visit include the review of ongoing projects such as the construction of a Surgical Unit in Batticaloa Teaching Hospital and Model Village Housing Projects. Additionally, discussions were held to expedite the completion of vital infrastructure like the temperature-controlled warehouse in Dambulla and the proposed solar facility in Sampur.

The High Commissioner also visited key facilities of the Lanka Indian Oil Corporation (LIOC) and inaugurated a new fuel shed in Trincomalee. He emphasized the corporation’s role in mitigating energy crises and addressed challenges faced by local communities, particularly in Oluvil harbor due to sediment deposits.

In a gesture of cultural and religious goodwill, High Commissioner Jha visited mosques, Buddhist temples, and paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi. He announced new financial assistance for underprivileged students at Eastern University and distributed aid to needy families, underscoring India’s commitment to social welfare.

Highlighting the importance of connectivity, the High Commissioner announced the resumption of ferry services between Nagapattinam and Jaffna, demonstrating India’s dedication to fostering closer ties with Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province.”
