Lankanduwa intervened and steps were taken to bring the culprit of Rajiv’s murder to Sri Lanka
Thillaiyampalam Maheshwari’s dream of meeting her son, whom she had not seen for three decades, has come true.
The Indian and Sri Lankan governments have approved the repatriation of her son Thillaiyampalam Suthanthiraraja alias Santhan to Sri Lanka.
The Supreme Court of India acquitted 7 people, including Santhan, who was convicted in the case of the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who had been in prison for more than three decades.
A temporary travel document valid till August 01, 2024 was issued to him earlier this month by the Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Chennai.
The original travel document issued to him has been forwarded to the Secretary to the State Government of Tamil Nadu (State Department) to expedite and expedite the process of his repatriation to Sri Lanka.
“We would be grateful if you could confirm that you have received the travel documents and expedite the process of deporting the above Sri Lankan as soon as possible and inform the mission about its progress,” said the letter written by Counselor Harsha Ruparatne on behalf of the Deputy High Commissioner.
Santhan had earlier appealed to the state and central governments to allow him to return to his home country to be with his elderly mother. Her mother Thillaiyampalam Maheshwari had also made a tearful plea to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to send her son back.
His lawyer P Pugalendi said that Santhan is currently in the Chennai General Hospital for treatment of a serious liver disease.
