India Supplements Transit Housing Construction Project at Madhu Shrine, Mannar, with Additional Funds

High Commissioner of India, H.E. Santosh Jha, and Secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, Mr. W.S. Sathyananda, signed and exchanged diplomatic letters on 2 July 2024 to formalize the modalities related to the Low-Cost Transit Housing Construction Project at Madhu Shrine, Mannar. This follows the Government of India’s (GOI) decision to provide an additional grant of approximately SLR 100 million for the project, bringing GOI’s total commitment to over SLR 400 million.

In response to the economic challenges in Sri Lanka, GOI decided to allocate additional funds to nine ongoing grant projects to ensure their timely completion. This move also aims to mitigate the impact of rising construction material costs on these projects. The Low-Cost Transit Housing Construction Project at Madhu Shrine, Mannar, is among these nine projects.

A total of 96 transit houses will now be constructed with the GOI grant at Madhu Shrine, providing accommodation for pilgrims visiting the shrine. The project is currently underway, with the proposed transit houses at various stages of construction.
