The Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, officially handed over the first payment for the implementation of hybrid power projects in the islands of Delft, Nainativu, and Analaitivu. The funds were presented to Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena, Secretary of the Ministry of Power and Energy, and Ranjith Sepala, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA), during a ceremony at the Indian High Commission on Wednesday, August 28.
These projects are the result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between India and Sri Lanka in March 2022. The hybrid renewable energy initiative will integrate solar and wind power to meet the energy demands of the three islands, which are currently not connected to Sri Lanka’s national grid. The implementation contract was awarded to U-Solar Clean Energy Solutions Ltd. on March 1, 2024.
Initial work has already begun on the islands, with the project expected to be completed by early March 2025 and officially handed over by late April 2025. This $11 million initiative is funded by the Government of India and underscores the strong bilateral cooperation between the two nations, particularly in the energy sector. It also highlights India’s ongoing commitment to human-centric development partnerships in Sri Lanka.
