In a significant development, India and Sri Lanka exchanged Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) on Monday during a meeting in New Delhi, attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Prime Minister Modi expressed his satisfaction over President Dissanayake choosing India for his first foreign visit as President, emphasizing that the visit would strengthen the long-standing relationship between the two nations.
Welcoming the Sri Lankan leader, PM Modi stated, “We are delighted that as President, you have chosen India for your first State Visit. Today’s meeting brings new momentum and energy to our partnership. We have adopted a forward-looking approach, focusing on investment-led growth and connectivity as key drivers of our economic cooperation.”
Highlighting the shared vision for enhanced collaboration, PM Modi added, “We have decided that physical, digital, and energy connectivity will form the pillars of our partnership. This includes projects like electricity grid connectivity and a multi-petroleum pipeline.”
PM Modi Addresses Tamilian Fishermen and Provincial Elections
During the discussions, Prime Minister Modi addressed the recurring issue of Indian fishermen being detained by Sri Lankan authorities after unintentionally entering Sri Lankan waters. He underscored the importance of adopting a humanitarian approach to resolve such matters and reiterated the need for reconciliation and inclusivity in Sri Lanka.
“President Dissanayake assured me of his commitment to fulfilling the aspirations of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka,” PM Modi said. “We discussed the full implementation of the Sri Lankan Constitution and the need to conduct Provincial Council Elections. These steps will be vital for fostering harmony and inclusiveness.”
PM Modi emphasized the importance of addressing the livelihood concerns of fishermen, reflecting mutual understanding and cooperation on this sensitive issue.
Expanding Connectivity and Tourism: New Ferry Services Announced
The Indian Prime Minister also highlighted initiatives aimed at boosting connectivity between the two countries, which would, in turn, enhance tourism and cultural ties. Recalling India’s recognition of the Pali language as a classical language and its significance in Sri Lanka, PM Modi outlined the plans for new ferry services to strengthen regional connectivity.
“Ferry services and the Chennai-Jaffna flight have significantly boosted tourism and cultural exchanges,” PM Modi remarked. “Following the successful launch of the Nagapattinam-Kankesanthurai ferry route, we are now set to launch a new ferry service between Rameswaram in India and Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. Additionally, we aim to unlock the vast potential of tourism through the Buddhist circuit and the Ramayana trail in Sri Lanka.”
The exchange of MoUs and announcements made during this high-level meeting signal a renewed era of cooperation and partnership between India and Sri Lanka, aimed at fostering growth, connectivity, and shared cultural heritage.
