Two new mosquito species have been found in the country by the Association of Health Entomology Officials.
Its National Organizer, Disnaka Dissanayake, stated that Culex sintellus mosquitos have been recorded in the Mirigama and Kalutara districts.
The identical mosquito species has previously been reported from Thailand and India.
Culex niyainfula is the name of another mosquito species found in Sri Lanka.
This type of mosquito, which is common in India, is a carrier of the disease cerebral malaria.
According to Dissanayake, investigations are underway to determine whether this mosquito species is an active vector in Sri Lanka.
He then said that samples of four other types of mosquitoes found in Sri Lanka had been sent to a Korean institution to be identified.
