Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya has issued a directive highlighting that it has become a common practice among some police officers to present gifts to higher-ranking officers on special occasions, such as the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The IGP has instructed that such gift-giving must cease immediately.
The directive also extends to civilian personnel within the Sri Lanka Police Service. According to the letter, if officers wish to convey greetings, it is sufficient to do so via a phone call or a WhatsApp message, and no in-person meetings with higher-ranking officers should take place in the future.
Furthermore, the letter emphasizes that higher-ranking police officers are strictly prohibited from accepting such gifts moving forward. Legal action will be taken against anyone who violates this order.
The IGP’s letter has been circulated to the Deputy Inspector Generals of Police responsible for each province, Senior Superintendents of Police, Divisional Officers, and Senior Police Officers in charge of all districts.
