The identity of the suspect arrested for allegedly raping a female doctor, who was undergoing specialist training at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, in her official residence has been confirmed.
The suspect has been identified as Kiribandalage Nilantha Madhuranga Ratnayake, also known as Kiribandalage Nilantha Madura Ratnayake, a resident of the Navanagara area in Galnewa.
Reports indicate that the suspect was previously remanded in custody in connection with another case and was released just a day before the incident.
Further investigations have revealed that the 34-year-old suspect was also a chivaradhari (a person who had taken Buddhist monastic robes). Additionally, he had been evading military service.
The suspect was apprehended by a special police team in Galnewa. After committing the crime, he fled with one of the victim’s two mobile phones. Police tracked the missing device by analyzing signals received from the other phone.
Due to the absence of phone signals near the Aukana railway station, police intensified search operations in the area. Eventually, a special team from the Galnewa Police discovered the suspect hiding in the Elabadugama area of Galnewa, leading to his arrest.
