The International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed Sumathi Dharmawardena P.C. as the new Independent Chair of the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), effective from November 1, 2024.
Dharmawardena succeeds Sir Ronnie Flanagan, who held the position for 14 years before retiring. With a distinguished career, Dharmawardena has served as an Additional Solicitor General at Sri Lanka’s Attorney General’s Department, representing the Sri Lankan government and the Ministry of Sport in various legal proceedings.
Dharmawardena also brings extensive experience from his collaborations with Interpol and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, where he focused on anti-corruption efforts within sports. His role included leading investigations and prosecutions under Sri Lanka’s Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act, a law he was instrumental in drafting. Additionally, he has represented Sri Lanka in negotiations with international sporting bodies.
As the Independent Chair, Dharmawardena will oversee the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit, providing strategic leadership while the ACU’s day-to-day operations are managed by the General Manager of Integrity.
