Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, Minister of Judicial Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms, claims that he was fired from his ministerial post in 2017 for opposing the Hambantota Port Agreement, and that the agreement was the reason for the delay in obtaining a loan from the International Monetary Fund.

Minister also noted , as a result of the agreement, many countries, including India, China, Australia, Japan, the United States, Burma, and Europe, have become estranged from Sri Lanka.

According to the Minister, a light rail agreement signed with Japan while Ranil Wickremesinghe was Prime Minister was cancelled without any study, and Sri Lanka has offended many countries with such incidents.

The minister opined, even if the country receives a loan from the International Monetary Fund, it will not make a significant difference in its economy, but it will inspire confidence in other countries around the world.
