A shocking incident has been reported in the Kurunegala area, where a husband attacked the owner of a foreign employment agency, demanding the immediate return of his wife, who had been sent abroad as a domestic worker.

The suspect, who allegedly slit the throat of M.S.M. Noor Amin, owner of the Al-Aqsha Foreign Employment Agency located at Nawinna Junction, was remanded until December 18 by Kurunegala Magistrate Bandula Gunaratne. The Magistrate also directed the Kurunegala Prison Superintendent to ensure the suspect’s identity remains concealed from the public until his court appearance.

The attack occurred around 2:30 PM when the suspect entered the agency to meet Noor Amin. After a heated altercation, the suspect assaulted Amin with a knife. Police Sergeant Jayasinghe reported that employees, alarmed by the commotion, rushed to the scene, where they found the suspect threatening others while holding a knife.

The agency manager, Ms. Kasthuri, intervened bravely, disarming the suspect and subduing him. Despite her efforts, both Noor Amin and Ms. Kasthuri sustained injuries during the struggle. Noor Amin, who suffered critical injuries, was transported to the Intensive Care Unit of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, where his condition remains critical. Due to the severity of his injuries, police have yet to record his statement.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is a drug addict who traveled from Hasalaka armed with a knife, allegedly planning the attack. Following the incident, the suspect attempted to harm himself but was promptly apprehended by Police Inspector Sarath Sumanaweera.

Magistrate Bandula Gunaratne ordered a detailed investigation into the case. The suspect will be presented for an identification parade on December 18, and the Kurunegala Police have been instructed to provide an updated report on the investigation’s progress by the same date.

This incident highlights the need for vigilance and stringent measures to address grievances related to foreign employment practices. Further updates on the victim’s recovery and the legal proceedings will follow.
