The United Human Rights Organization has issued a statement emphasizing the need to ensure the safety of journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama. The organization expressed appreciation for the vital role journalists play in democratically expressing their views, holding programs, and informing the public. It condemned any attempts by individuals or political leaders to infringe upon these rights.
The statement also noted that a proper investigation has not yet been conducted regarding a recent incident involving two unidentified individuals near Samarawickrama’s residence, as well as an attack on his home by unknown assailants approximately two years ago.
The organization praised Chamuditha Samarawickrama for his efforts to expose hidden fraud and corruption in the country. It highlighted the potential threats to his safety due to his work on controversial issues and called for immediate measures to ensure his protection, urging responsible officials, including the Inspector General of Police, to take appropriate action.
