In its investigation into the May 9th, 2022 unrest, the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka stated that the IGP was clearly in breach of duty by failing to provide adequate protection to peaceful protesters and to uphold the rule of law.
The HRCSL recommended that the President conduct an investigation into this aspect of the matter and take the necessary steps to ensure that such actions by the Police Department’s Head do not occur again in the future.
According to the HRCSL, if victims can be identified, the police should adequately compensate them for their injuries.
It is also recommended that the President direct an investigation into the failure of all senior police officers, including the IGP, who were on duty at the protesting sites in Colombo to provide adequate protection to peaceful protesters on May 9th, 2022.
