Heavy rain since last night to the south! The roads are flooded! Several rivers flooding! Schools closed! VIDEO I Sri Lanka Latest News

A flood warning has been issued due to significant rainfall in the upper and middle reaches of the Nilwala River Basin. Sri Lanka Latest News

Accordingly, the Irrigation Department warns that the following areas may experience significant flooding in the next 24 hours.

The warning applies to the low-lying areas belonging to the Nilwala Ganga spillway in Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Pasgoda, Akurassa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Matara and Devinuwara Divisional Secretariat Divisions.

The Irrigation Department also requests the people to be very careful about this.

Meanwhile, it is reported that the Matara – Kotapala road has been blocked from Kirilipana due to heavy rains.

Reporters of “Ada Derana” mentioned that the road from Kirilipana area has been blocked due to a landslide and even a small vehicle cannot pass through that area.

Morawaka – Neluwa road is also blocked from Morawaka town and Kirama Oya is flooded from Pitabaddara area due to overflowing.

It has been decided to close several schools due to the heavy rain that has been falling in the southern province since last night (22).

The Southern Provincial Education Secretary stated that taking into consideration the existing situation, the Regional Education Directors were authorized to close schools in Akurassa, Deniya, Mulatiyana and Walasmulla.

Ms. Dhammika Priyadarshani, Education Director of Deniya Region, said that due to the emergency situation, all the schools in Deniya Education Zone were given leave today (23) subject to the approval of the Southern Provincial Education Secretary.
