The District Disaster Management Unit says that light traffic in the village was completely stopped due to flooding of the Manampitiya gravel area on the main road of Polonnaruwa-Madakalpuwa by several feet due to the overflowing of the Mahaweli River. Sri Lanka Latest News

The officials of Mahaweli say that the Mahaweli River has started to overflow because two sluice gates have been opened in the Moragaha Gangakanda water body and the large body of water coming out has joined the Ambanganga and flowed into the Mahaweli River through it.

Due to this, the Sungawila Somavati road has also been flooded, the police say. The police also mentioned that the water level may change in the next few hours due to heavy rain. Even so, the District Disaster Management Unit informs that vehicular traffic will have to be stopped completely.

According to the officials of Mahaweli, the main lakes of Polonnaruwa district such as Parakrama Samudraya, Minneriya, Kaudulla, and the small lakes of Mahaweli Kala have all reached the overflow level.
