The Meteorology Department has issued a ‘Caution’ level heat warning for select areas in the North-Western province and districts of Gampaha, Colombo, Hambantota, and Moneragala.
As per the Heat Index Advisory from the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, the heat index, which denotes the temperature felt by the human body, is anticipated to reach ‘Caution’ levels in these regions.
Temperatures ranging from 39 to 45 degrees Celsius are considered cautionary, posing risks of fatigue and heat cramps with prolonged exposure or activity.
In light of this advisory, individuals are strongly advised to prioritize hydration, take regular breaks in shaded areas, particularly at worksites, and to check on vulnerable groups such as the elderly and the sick who may be indoors.
Furthermore, precautions include avoiding leaving children unattended in vehicles, limiting strenuous outdoor activities, seeking shade, and maintaining hydration while outdoors.
Additionally, wearing lightweight, white, or light-coloured clothing during heat waves is recommended for optimal comfort and safety.
