A post and accompanying photograph published on the Ministry of Health’s official Facebook page regarding birth control have sparked significant public criticism.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa had earlier brought attention to birth control awareness by creating a cartoon adaptation of a well-known video in which he appeared walking with a stick.
The Ministry’s post states that the use of condoms is healthier than the use of birth control pills. It further notes that condoms help prevent unwanted pregnancies as well as sexually transmitted diseases.
However, the post has drawn strong criticism in the comments section and across social media platforms.
Members of the Malaima party have also stated that the content is entirely inconsistent with the past practices of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). They questioned the ethical standards involved in publishing content perceived as insulting toward the leader of another political party on the official Facebook page of a government ministry.
It is also recalled that a highly derogatory post targeting former State Minister Dr. Seetha Arambepola had previously appeared on the President’s official Tamil Facebook page. The Presidential Media Division did not initiate any investigation into that incident, and it is noteworthy that the relevant Facebook post was not published by mistake.
