The Election Commission made a special statement this afternoon regarding an announcement issued today by the Director General of Government Information, Mr. Dinith Chinthaka Karunaratne, saying that the gazette notice to start the local government election process has not yet been sent to the government press.
There, the Commissioner General of the Election Commission Mr. Saman Sri Ratnayake stated that the Director General of Government News has done something that is not his business.
He further said that it is the commission’s duty to issue the relevant gazette notice and said that the gazette will be issued on time.
He pointed out that the commission acted in the same way in the last local government election held in 2018, and the former commissioner of the election commission was aware of it.
Accordingly, he pointed out that the commission is also focusing on the legal measures that can be taken regarding such false advertisements.
