The Hambantota International Port has recently undergone dredging operations due to a decrease in the required depth in certain areas.
Chief Executive Officer of the Hambantota International Port, Mr. Ravi Jayawickrama, stated that the dredging initiative was undertaken to restore the port’s depth to its standard levels.
He explained that while the port maintains a depth of 17 meters from sea level, silt deposits in some locations have necessitated deepening efforts. The dredging process is being carried out in accordance with the necessary safety and operational standards to ensure the port remains navigable for vessels.
Given that Hambantota International Port serves as a key hub for cargo, service, and passenger ships, this project aims to maintain the required depth at all points, ensuring seamless operations and compliance with industry standards.
