The government has announced plans to gradually develop the Jaffna International Airport into a fully operational international airport.
Addressing the second phase of the development project, Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Bimal Ratnayake emphasized the importance of enhancing infrastructure to accommodate narrow-body aircraft such as the Airbus A320.
The proposed upgrades include improvements to the runway, taxiways, aircraft parking areas, and passenger terminals.
Minister Ratnayake further stated that while the current land area is deemed sufficient for the planned expansion, additional land acquisition may be considered if the need arises.
Highlighting the importance of a proper feasibility study, the Minister said, “We are committed to developing Jaffna Airport into a true international gateway, but it must be done with a strong business plan. We thank the Government of India for their support, including the deployment of two IndiGo flights. However, this must be commercially viable.”
Drawing a comparison with the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, he cautioned against undertaking large-scale development without a clear business model, warning that such projects risk becoming underutilized.
The Minister also confirmed that tenders for the terminal expansion are expected to be launched within the next month.
