The government has decided to immediately present a bill to Parliament that would revoke the parliamentary seat of an MP if he or she switches political parties.
Accordingly, the ruling party has decided to submit this bill to Parliament within the next few weeks.
This was one of the key promises made by the government during both the presidential election and the general election, pledging to abolish the current ability of MPs to change political parties.
A renewed public discussion on this proposed legislation arose a few weeks ago after the President appointed former Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP and constituency organiser Eran Wickramaratne as Chairman of the Cricket Board.
Following this, the government has now decided to expedite the presentation of the relevant bill in Parliament.
