Government to Reassess January 2025 Public Sector Salary Increase, Says Cabinet Spokesman

Cabinet Spokesman, Minister Vijitha Herath, stated that the previous government’s decision to increase public servants’ salaries from January 2025 requires further review. He made this announcement during a press briefing today (15), following the latest Cabinet discussions.

“The previous Cabinet made a hasty decision to raise the salaries of government employees, effective from January, right after a close vote. However, upon review, we found that the Ministry of Finance had not granted any formal approval for this move. This has misled the public,” Minister Herath explained.

He further clarified that the current government has not promised any such increases without proper examination. “Can this be done? How? We need to thoroughly assess the financial situation before making a final decision. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but it must be decided based on our economic realities,” he added.
