Government Reportedly Postpones Provincial Council Elections Indefinitely
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The government has reportedly made an unofficial decision to indefinitely postpone the provincial council elections that were scheduled to be held next year.

Last week, the Mawrata newspaper made an exclusive revelation that the government was planning to conduct the provincial council elections during the first quarter of next year, with the final decision expected to be made by the President in January.

The report further stated that the government was preparing to present a popular budget for 2026, strategically targeting the upcoming provincial council elections.

Confirming that revelation, a powerful government minister, K.D. Lalkantha, had also announced that the government had decided to hold the elections next year.

However, following several rounds of extensive discussions held within the JVP last week, it has reportedly been decided to postpone the provincial council elections indefinitely.

During these discussions, the JVP’s stance on the provincial council system, the political solution for the North and East, and the power-sharing mechanism were examined in depth. It is reported that a proposal was made to defer the elections until a final decision is reached on these matters.

Consequently, it is learned that the government has also withdrawn its earlier plan to present a popular budget next year.

Further details regarding this development are expected to be revealed in this week’s “State Secrets” column of the Mawrata newspaper.
