At a special media briefing held to inform the public about the government’s future measures to effectively address the current crisis, Commissioner General of Essential Services, Prabath Chandrakirthi, revealed several key developments.
He stated that the Cabinet, which convened today, has decided to appoint four main committees to manage the prevailing challenges.
These decisions were made following a high-level discussion chaired by the President, focusing on measures required to ensure the country’s energy security, as well as the uninterrupted continuation of economic activities and essential public services.
In line with the Cabinet’s decision, a special committee has been established under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister to ensure the smooth functioning of government services without disruption. Additionally, an Energy Committee, headed by Minister Vijitha Herath, has been appointed to address issues and requirements within the energy sector.
A separate committee, led by Bimal Ratnayake, has been tasked with overseeing the efficient distribution of essential commodities and regulating related activities. Furthermore, the responsibility of providing essential welfare services to various segments of society has been assigned to a committee chaired by Minister Upali Pannilage.
The government has also taken steps to appoint relevant Ministry Secretaries, along with other key public officials, to support the work of these committees and ensure their effective operation.
Commissioner General Chandrakirthi further emphasized that the primary objective of establishing these committees is to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the current national situation and to systematically guide future actions.
These decisions have been taken in light of ongoing disruptions to energy supplies, attributed to the military situation in the Middle East. It was also reported that the relevant ministers and ministry secretaries were present at the discussion.
