The government has decided not to extend the tenures of the three service chiefs and several senior officers, including the Chief of Defence Staff, General Shavendra Silva, who are scheduled to retire, according to a report by The Island.
As per the decision, Army Commander Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage and Navy Commander Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, both currently serving under their second extensions, and Air Force Commander Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, on his first extension, will not be granted further tenure.
Additionally, General Shavendra Silva, the Chief of Defence Staff, who is due to retire on December 31, will also not receive an extension of service.
In a related move, the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff is set to be dissolved, with its responsibilities expected to be directly managed by the Ministry of Defence moving forward.
