It is reported that a group of MPs in Pohottuwa have raised strong objections to the bill for the independence of the Central Bank to be submitted to Parliament by the government.

They have pointed out that if this bill is passed, the government will definitely have to carry out domestic debt restructuring, which is a very adverse condition of the financial fund.

If that happens, they point out that there may be a serious risk of collapse of the local banking system.

It has been learned that this group of MPs have expressed their opposition to the proposal to make the central bank independent according to the conditions of the International Monetary Fund, and if the proposal is implemented, it will be impossible to prevent the central bank from becoming an institution that behaves according to the needs of the International Monetary Fund rather than the advancement of the country. .

The opposition political parties have already protested against this bill and as a joint group they have decided to work against it in the parliament.

Last week, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya held a special workshop for its MPs in this regard at the office of the opposition leader, and the economic experts who were present also gave a long explanation about the serious clauses in this bill that are harmful to the country.

In addition, it is reported that a group of independent economic experts sent a letter to the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as well as the opposition party leaders last week explaining the serious situation in writing.

It is said that if this bill is passed in the parliament, the International Monetary Fund will control the central bank in the way it wants, and they have indicated to Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa and the opposition representatives in their presentation.

Also to know that not only the current Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, but also the former Governor of the Central Bank, Mr. Indrajith Coomaraswamy, who was behind Sri Lanka’s inclusion in the IMF programme, are people who receive salaries from the Monetary Fund and that they are a set of people who work according to the instructions of that institution.

However, when the opposition groups challenged this bill before the Supreme Court, even the Supreme Court pointed out that many of the clauses included in it are against the Constitution.

However, the opposition has raised a number of serious issues regarding the manner in which Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena behaved when informing Parliament of that fact.

In particular, the Member of Parliament Mr. Udaya Gammanpila had stated that the Speaker did not inform the Parliament about this in a correct manner and that his parliamentary privileges were violated.

In addition, it has been learned that a group of experts related to the economy have planned to inform the political parties about this bill tomorrow.
