In a move set to significantly improve travel convenience and safety, Google Maps has rolled out an enhanced road information update system for Sri Lanka, covering more than 12,000 kilometres of main roads. The feature goes live today as part of a pilot initiative running until December 31.
Under this new update, users will begin receiving real-time alerts on six specific types of road conditions—including lane closures, construction activity, and other disruptions that may impact travel time. The alerts are designed to help motorists plan their journeys more efficiently, reduce delays, and avoid unexpected traffic build-ups.
The initiative marks a major step forward in integrating smarter navigation support into Sri Lanka’s transport landscape. With the country’s road network often affected by weather events, ongoing repairs, and urban congestion, the new feature aims to provide a clearer picture of on-ground conditions before and during travel.
Authorities have encouraged all residents and visitors to ensure their Google Maps app is updated to access the new functions. “This will be a valuable tool for anyone travelling across the island, especially during the festive season and year-end rush,” an official familiar with the project noted.
Travelers are urged to check their Maps app regularly, stay informed of live updates, and prioritise safe driving as the pilot progresses.
