Jail officials have given Mr. Gnanasara Thero, who was brought to Welikada prison at around 1.00 pm yesterday (28), the jail clothes (jumper) given to prisoners by the prison and he has not expressed any objection to wearing the clothes this time, prison sources say.

The sources also state that he told the prison officials that he would go inside the cell and take it off.

Gnanasara Thero, who is detained in the ‘R’ ward of the Welikada prison, was not registered yesterday (28) and will be given a prison number today (29).

Today (29) he will be presented to the prison doctor as well as other new inmates. A senior prison officer told ‘Dinamina’ that the normal procedure followed by the prison department for the imprisonment of other prisoners was also followed for Gnanasara Thero and he is spending his time peacefully in the prison ward as usual.

Before this, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison and after almost 2 years, he was released on the 23rd of May 2019 on presidential pardon.
