The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has stated that it will resume island-wide trade union action if the agreements reached with the Minister of Health to address issues affecting the free healthcare system and medical officers are not implemented.
The association pointed out that the 2026 Budget proposal presented by the President in November last year failed to include both short-term and long-term policies or measures necessary to identify and resolve the fundamental issues faced by the country’s health sector and medical professionals. As a result, the GMOA noted that significant unrest has emerged within the health system and among healthcare workers.
In response, the GMOA had previously launched several trade union actions demanding solutions to these pressing issues. However, the association temporarily suspended these actions following written agreements reached with the Minister of Health.
At a recent Executive Council meeting held at an extended level, the GMOA reviewed the current situation and decided to grant the Minister of Health and the Ministry of Health a period of 10 days to implement the agreed measures and resolve the outstanding issues.
The association further stated that if the Ministry fails to do so within the stipulated time frame, the Executive Committee has unanimously decided to commence continuous island-wide industrial action from the 23rd.
